Some minor changes

This time I didn’t make a complete redesign of my website – it’s really lot of work after all – but instead focused on improving the old one. The “about me”- and “portfolio”-pages are re-implemented, so this website is not just a blog. I really like the portfolio design, which I spent a lot of time working on. It’s hard to present programming projects in an appealing way, since I can’t just show the code and say “Hey look at it!”. Code is like poetry, only in a foreign language that not all people speak. And I don’t want to end with a portfolio page like I did before: where my artworks and websites are highlighted the most, because … you know … I don’t consider myself a designer at all, it’s just trial and error.

Don’t concentrate to much on the about-page, it’s just a placeholder for something more elaborate. I need some good photo of me first and a good text which focuses on me. And there are still the obligatory links to my different Web 2.0 accounts missing. Did I mention that everyone and their mum seems to have a Twitter-account? Would like to start my own, but I don’t know what I should write – and who would read it? My friends don’t seem to be very Web 2.0-ish.

Completely unrelated (as usual): I bought an account for the indie-game Minecraft on the second day after I heard from it. Although the graphics look old, it’s very fun and has endless possibilites for the future. It’s still in alpha-stage and I hope that we get some API and can program our own plugins and addons. I’d like to implement a train-system and some landscape-destroying flint – mmh, really reminds of goold old multiplayer Clonk-rounds, building bases, mining gold, flooding caves with water, killing monsters. Minecraft = Clonk – Plugins + 3D.

X-Fi 2: Dharma

Yep, seems like I’m really fascinated with programming my new MP3-Player, the Creative Zen X-Fi 2. Strange thing is that I don’t have any ideas for a game on this little gadget, apart from classics like Snake and Tetris. So I’m just spending my time with developing my GUI framework further which should come in handy if I really want to start scripting a real game. I really like developing frameworks, creating whole classes and defining APIs, so other people can hook into and use them.

The framework now consists of several different widgets, slowly growing in size: boxes, images, texts, sliders/progress bars, textboxes – and now even a virtual keyboard with several layouts! I just wish I could actually use the framework for something bigger … Nevertheless, you can grab the code from my GitHub Dharma repo.

Apart from the whole X-Fi 2 stuff, I want to actually update my website. It now merely consists of this blog without all the ‘About me’ and ‘Projects’-sections. Problem is that while Chyrp is an awesome little content management system, it does not have a lot of plugins by default, e.g. for a portfolio-page. Seems like I need to create one on my own, but then I need to figure out its API before I can start. Did I mention that I prefer to write my own frameworks instead of using predefined ones?

Yep, new design. Again. Seems like I do not really like dark themes, because since the new old design went online, I didn’t do a single thing for it. And this new steampunk-influenced one is another try to make a clean start back into blogging – now with Chyrp, a lightweight and modular blogging-engine, instead of the old full-blown WordPress. This whole new system focuses more on a mix between blogs and the all-new microblogging like Twitter which comes in handy for me, because it could get me back into writing more often and topic-specific. Let’s face it: the old blog was merely a monthly status-update, covering all the latest news in one single big post.

Cross your fingers that I’m more active this time ;)
